1. About these terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and GuzoTrips ("GuzoTrips", "we", "us"), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They apply to the GuzoTrips Driver app, the website at guzotrips.et, the passenger trip pages we send by SMS, and any related services (together, the "Service").

By creating an account, tapping "I agree" in the app, or using the Service, you accept these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. What GuzoTrips does

GuzoTrips gives taxi drivers a digital meter on their phone. The meter measures the distance and time of each trip using the phone's GPS and calculates the fare from the rates GuzoTrips publishes. When a trip starts, the passenger can receive an SMS with a link to follow the trip live and, at the end, a receipt.

GuzoTrips is a technology service. We do not provide transport ourselves, we do not employ drivers, and we are not a party to the agreement between a driver and a passenger. The driver alone is responsible for the ride.

3. Words used in these terms

  • Driver: a person registered in the GuzoTrips Driver app to use the meter.
  • Passenger: a person who rides with a driver and whose phone number the driver enters to receive the trip link and receipt.
  • Trip: a journey measured with the meter, from when the driver taps Start Trip to when the driver ends it.
  • Fare: the amount the meter calculates for a trip.
  • Service fee: the fee GuzoTrips charges drivers for using the Service.

4. Who can use the Service as a driver

To register and drive with GuzoTrips you must:

  • be at least 18 years old;
  • hold a valid Ethiopian driving licence for the vehicle you drive;
  • have the legal right to use the vehicle, with valid registration (libre) and the insurance the law requires;
  • hold any taxi or transport permit required by the Addis Ababa transport authorities or other authorities where you operate; and
  • use an Android phone with GPS, mobile data and an Ethiopian phone number that can receive SMS.

5. Your account and approval

  • You sign in with your phone number and a one-time code sent by SMS. Keep your phone and codes private. You are responsible for everything done with your account.
  • You must give true, complete and current information, including your name, driving licence number, vehicle details and plate number, and upload genuine documents and photos: driving licence, vehicle libre, national ID, a photo of yourself and a photo of the vehicle.
  • You must choose the correct vehicle type when you register (regular car or van/minibus). GuzoTrips may check and correct the vehicle type.
  • GuzoTrips reviews every registration. You can only start trips after your account is approved. We may approve, reject or ask for more information at our discretion.
  • If you edit your profile or vehicle, your account goes back for review, and you cannot start trips until it is approved again.
  • One account is for one person. You must not share, sell or transfer your account.

6. Your responsibilities as a driver

  • Drive safely and obey all traffic, transport and licensing laws.
  • Keep your vehicle clean, roadworthy and properly insured.
  • Treat passengers with respect, and never discriminate against or harass anyone.
  • Start the meter when the trip begins and end it when the trip ends. Do not leave the meter running when no passenger is travelling.
  • Charge only the fare the meter shows. Do not ask for more, add your own charges, or take a longer route on purpose.
  • Do not use your phone in a way that is unsafe or illegal while driving.
  • You are an independent driver. You decide when and whether to work, and you are responsible for your own taxes, permits, fuel, vehicle costs and mobile data.

7. Fares and how the meter works

The fare is calculated from rates GuzoTrips publishes in the app: a base fare, a rate per kilometre and a rate per minute. Vans and minibuses use separate van rates. A night charge is added once to trips that start during the night hours shown in the app (Addis Ababa time).

Distance is measured from your phone's GPS along the road actually driven. Time runs from the start of the trip to its end. Each trip is charged at least 1 kilometre and 1 minute. Before a trip, the app may show an estimated fare. The estimate is only a guide, and the final fare is what the meter calculates.

GPS and mobile networks are not perfect. Tall buildings, tunnels, weak signal or a phone setting can affect how distance is measured. The meter ignores readings it judges to be unreliable, such as very inaccurate positions or jumps faster than a car could travel. If you think a fare is wrong, contact us. We may review the trip record and correct it.

We may change the rates at any time. New rates apply to trips that start after the change. Passengers pay the fare to the driver in cash unless the driver and passenger agree another way. GuzoTrips does not collect fares from passengers.

8. Location and the meter during trips

The meter needs your phone's precise location. During a trip, the app keeps measuring while the screen is off or another app is open, and Android shows a notification that the meter is running. This tracking stops when you end the trip.

While you are signed in and approved, the app also sends your location to GuzoTrips every few seconds, so passengers can follow the trip and we can keep trip records. See the Privacy Policy for details.

If you turn off location, deny the permission, or stop the app, the meter may not measure the trip correctly.

9. Passengers

  • Enter a passenger's phone number only with their agreement, and only to send them their trip link and receipt.
  • Passengers do not need an account. The trip link shows the driver's first name, vehicle and plate, the route and, during the trip, the car's position.
  • Passengers who have a problem with a trip can contact GuzoTrips using the details at the end of these Terms.

10. Service fee and how to pay it

  • GuzoTrips charges drivers a service fee on each completed trip. The fee is a percentage of the fare, shown in the app (currently 2%). It is added to your balance automatically when each trip ends.
  • You pay your balance by sending money to the CBE or Telebirr account shown in the app and entering the transaction reference in the app. GuzoTrips checks the payment and clears your balance once it is confirmed.
  • Only pay to the accounts shown in the app. GuzoTrips is not responsible for money sent to the wrong account or with a wrong reference.
  • You must pay your balance on time. We may limit or suspend your account if your balance is unpaid.
  • We may change the fee by updating it in the app and telling drivers before the change applies.

11. Things you must not do

  • Use false identity details, fake or someone else's documents, or another person's vehicle without permission.
  • Interfere with the meter: faking GPS location, using another device or app to change readings, or starting or ending trips falsely.
  • Use the Service for anything illegal, or to carry illegal goods.
  • Copy, reverse engineer, resell, or interfere with the app, website or servers, or try to access accounts or data that are not yours.
  • Send messages to passengers through GuzoTrips for anything other than their trip.

12. Disclosure to authorities

You agree that GuzoTrips will disclose your identity, vehicle details, trip records and earnings data to Ethiopian government, transport, tax or law enforcement authorities upon a lawful official request. We may also share information where needed to protect someone's safety.

13. Suspension and ending your account

  • We may suspend, limit or close your account, with or without notice, if you break these Terms, give false information or documents, do not pay your balance, receive serious complaints, put passengers or others at risk, or if the law requires it. Where it is safe and lawful, we will tell you why.
  • You can stop using GuzoTrips at any time. To close your account, contact us. Any unpaid service fee stays due after your account is closed.
  • We may keep records after an account is closed where the law requires, or to settle disputes and prevent fraud.

14. Other services we rely on

The Service uses other companies, including mapping (Mapbox), SMS delivery, hosting and network security providers, and the banks and mobile money services drivers use to pay. Their services may sometimes be slow or unavailable, and their own terms apply to them.

15. App updates and availability

  • You may need to install updates to keep using the app. Older versions may stop working.
  • We try to keep the Service available, but it may be interrupted for maintenance, network problems or reasons outside our control.
  • We may add, change or remove features.

16. Our content and name

The GuzoTrips name, logo, app, website and their content belong to GuzoTrips. You may use them only to use the Service as these Terms allow.

17. Disclaimers and limits of liability

  • The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". As far as the law allows, we do not promise that it will be free of errors or always available, or that GPS measurements will be exact.
  • The driver alone is responsible for the ride, the vehicle, and the driver's conduct. GuzoTrips is not responsible for accidents, injuries, damage, lost property or disputes between drivers and passengers.
  • As far as the law allows, GuzoTrips is not liable for indirect losses such as lost earnings, and our total liability to a driver for any claim is limited to the service fees that driver paid us in the three months before the claim.
  • Nothing in these Terms limits any right or liability that cannot be limited under Ethiopian law.

18. Your responsibility for claims

You agree to cover GuzoTrips for losses, claims and costs that come from your driving, your vehicle, your breaking of these Terms or the law, or your dealings with passengers.

19. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms. We will post the new version on this page with a new date and, for important changes, tell drivers in the app or by SMS. If you keep using the Service after a change, you accept the updated Terms.

20. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. If you have a complaint, please contact us first so we can try to solve it. If we cannot, the dispute will be settled by the competent courts in Addis Ababa.

21. General

  • If any part of these Terms is found invalid, the rest still applies.
  • If we do not enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
  • You may not transfer your rights under these Terms. We may transfer ours, for example if GuzoTrips is reorganised or sold.
  • These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and GuzoTrips about the Service.
  • If these Terms are translated, the English version applies if the versions differ.
